Art

Ashley Phipps The mission of the Hanover County Schools visual arts program is to engage students in thinking creatively and solving problems in order to communicate visually in the 21st century. The universal language of art allows students to make connections and comprehend themes of expression around the world, past and present.

Art at SAES

Ms. Ashley Phipps serves as our art teacher. Students in grades k–5 at South Anna Elementary School attend art once a week for 45 minutes. The Aat program at South Anna Elementary is designed to provide students an opportunity to express their unique thoughts, ideas, and emotions. All students explore a range of art media, subject matter, artists, and ideas. Students at every level learn and explore a wide range of art techniques such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and crafts.

Art helps students make connections to history, math, science, and literature and allows them to discover different cultures and respond to the world around them. At South Anna, every student can achieve success in art.

Our goal for the young artists at South Anna is to provide an art experience that allows each student the opportunity to build:

  • Creative problem solving skills through making choices about their artwork.
  • A positive sense of community through working together and learning from one another.
  • Responsibility through consistent classroom routines and time management.
  • Art appreciation through learning art history, multicultural themes, and various art processes.
  • Character development through learning to value their personal artwork and that of their peers.

Frequently Asked Art Questions

What types of materials are used in the art room?
We use a variety of materials, most of which are consumable. We go through a lot of paints, pastels, markers, and paper. We also use craft materials, yarn for weavings, clay for ceramics and modeling clays for 3D projects. You never know what might show up in the art room! Donated art supplies are always welcome!

Where is my child's artwork?
We send artwork home throughout the year. We save many pieces, however, to display in the hallways and throughout the community at various art shows. This artwork will eventually make its way home; it just takes a little extra time and patience. Other times, we experiment with new techniques so there is no final take-home project. All artwork will find its way home in student made portfolios at the end of the school year!

Throughout the year, we display our students’ artwork within the school and in the community, including the following:

  • The Hanover County School Board Office
  • Hanover County Public School’s Arts and Science Festival
  • Youth Art Month (March) Show
  • Local Business Partners/Community Locations
